A 24-year-old South Carolina woman who was just weeks away from sharing her pregnancy with the world lost her life—and the life of her unborn son—following a bizarre go-kart accident that left her family shattered. Baylee Johnson, a medical assistant from Sumter, had already named her baby boy Johnny.
She was 16 weeks pregnant when she climbed into a go-kart at a local track on the day of the incident. According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, her hair became caught in the vehicle’s sprocket, causing her neck to hyperextend and cutting off her ability to breathe. The accident happened eight days before Johnson died Monday, reports say.
Her unborn child, due in February, also did not survive. The double loss was confirmed in a family obituary that described the heartbreaking reality no parent should ever face.
Before the tragedy, Johnson’s partner, Justin Lowder, had kept their exciting news private. But as her condition grew increasingly dire, he made the painful decision to share it with the world. “This isn’t how Baylee and I ever imagined sharing this news, but God has blessed us with a baby boy,” Lowder wrote on Facebook last Thursday.
“Please pray for Baylee and our precious baby boy.”
The post came just four days before Johnson and Johnny passed away. Lowder’s words now stand as a devastating tribute to the family he almost had.
Johnson’s loved ones remembered her as someone with a deeply caring heart, overjoyed at the thought of becoming a mother. “She dreamed about him, talked about him, prayed for him and was already planning the life she wanted to give him,” they said in the obituary. “From the moment she learned he was there, Baylee was his mama, and Johnny was completely and unconditionally loved.”
They also found a small measure of comfort in knowing the pair “never had to say goodbye to one another.”
Beyond her role as a soon-to-be mom, Johnson was a devoted aunt, lovingly called “Bay Bay” by her nieces and nephew. Her family described those moments spent coloring, laughing, and being silly as “the most precious memories they will carry.”
Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday, as a community mourns a life cut short in the most unexpected way. As loved ones gather to say goodbye, one question remains: how does a day meant for fun turn into an unthinkable loss that changes everything?
