In a heartbreaking case that has shocked the community, a mother and her boyfriend have been found guilty of the murder of her two-year-old daughter, Isabelle Welsh. The tragic events unfolded last September when Isabelle was discovered lifeless at the bottom of the stairs in their Thornaby, Teesside home.
Alexandra Walker, 26, and her partner Harrison Simpson, 22, faced serious charges, including murder, child cruelty, and sexual assault. Both denied the allegations, but after nearly seven hours of deliberation, a jury at Teesside Crown Court reached a unanimous verdict, convicting them of murder by a majority of 11 to one.
The court heard harrowing details about the circumstances surrounding Isabelle’s death. Prosecutor Richard Wright KC revealed that the toddler’s body was covered in bruises, particularly on her head, neck, and abdomen. He stated that her demise was not due to natural causes, but rather the result of a severe head injury inflicted shortly before her tragic collapse.
Reports indicate that Isabelle’s skull was fractured, and her brain sustained significant damage, leading to her heart stopping due to the assault. The jury learned that Walker and Simpson had only been in a relationship for a few months, during which Simpson frequently visited their home and spent considerable time with Isabelle.
Wright characterized their relationship as “unhealthy,” marked by substance 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮, which he suggested contributed to the deterioration of Isabelle’s care. The court was told that the little girl faced regular violence at the hands of her mother and her boyfriend.
