A British designer has come up with a striking new superyacht concept for an owner who wants to stand out from their super-rich friends on the water.
Andy Waugh’s concept, called Nouveau, lives up to its French name by putting a new spin on the aesthetic of a superyacht thanks to its eye-catching lines and walls that look like tentacles.
In addition to a dramatic design, the stunning vessel would boast an infinity pool, Jacuzzi and waterfall if someone is bold enough to build it.
London-based Waugh, known for his radical concepts and previous work with leading shipbuilders, was inspired by the art nouveau style that was in use in Europe and the US from the late 1800s to World War One.
His dynamic superyacht features an owner’s deck with a full-width suite and balconies on both sides, situated below the bridge deck.
The back of the owner’s deck features sunbathing and informal lounging areas that are linked to the decks above and below by spiral staircases and a water feature which runs from the sun deck’s Jacuzzi across the bridge and owner’s decks and down via a waterslide into the pool on the main deck.
‘The purpose of this feature is to enhance the feeling of being at one with nature and the seascape,’ said Waugh. ‘The sweeping, tentacle-like bulwark adds to the drama of the exterior styling whilst providing an enhanced sense of light, space and connection to the environment for the interior.’
With a head clearance of nearly 9ft, the spacious main deck can be used for a variety of purposes for entertaining.
It boasts twin VIP cabins with fold-down balconies and dining and lounging space leading onto an intimate deck with relaxed seating and the infinity pool.
The vessel also has an office, space for formal al fresco dining, accommodation for crew and a private sun deck that serves as a secluded retreat from the other social areas on board with 360-degree views, said Waugh.
He said: ‘Nouveau is aimed at the more modern client with a relatively small entourage who prefers to define themselves by their style and taste in design rather than by sheer size.
‘Practicality and efficient use of space were not primary concerns for the concept but despite its radical looks it has the potential to be a fully functioning yacht for owner and crew alike.’
When he designed the concept, Waugh was inspired by the works of art nouveau artists including Alphonse Mucha and Antoni Gaudi.
He said: ‘Nouveau is a concept that pushes the boundaries of the yacht aesthetic to an extreme degree made possible by sophisticated surface manipulation and careful management of three dimensional space.
The tense, diagonal lines create drama whilst concealing a surprisingly spacious interior.’
Waugh graduated from the prestigious Transport Design course at Coventry University and previously worked at London’s H2 Yacht Design.
His first major project was the award-winning Meya Meya and he has worked on superyachts as large as nearly 400ft.
