In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 102-year-old man has passed away after a tragic incident at a pub, igniting calls for justice from his grieving family. Phillip Ormerod, who suffered from dementia, was reportedly pushed off a stage while trying to ask for the music volume to be lowered at the Crow’s Nest pub in Cwmbran on August 1.
After the incident, Phillip was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His family has shared touching images of him, reflecting on the vibrant life he led, often engaging with younger patrons who admired him.
A 56-year-old man from Llanelli has been arrested on suspicion of assault, but Gwent Police have not confirmed whether the charges will be elevated following Phillip’s death. The suspect has been released while the investigation continues.
Robert Ormerod, Phillip’s son, expressed his deep sorrow and desire for justice, describing his father as a beloved figure who would often be treated to drinks by younger visitors at the pub. “He simply asked them to turn the music down,” Robert recounted. Tragically, as Phillip attempted to descend from the stage, he was reportedly pushed, leading to a broken hip that ultimately contributed to his passing.
Robert reflected on the painful circumstances surrounding his father’s death, stating, “It’s not a nice way to go, obviously in pain.” He lamented that while his father had lived a long life, the manner of his passing was particularly distressing. “It would’ve been nice if he’d gone quietly in his sleep,” he added.
Phillip was not only a father to Robert but also to another son and a great-grandfather. He had a fulfilling career as a design draughtsman before retiring and continued to live independently in Llanyrafon after losing his wife 40 years ago. “He was well-known around here, although many of his generation are gone,” Robert noted.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene around 10:25 PM on the night of the incident. Witnesses have described how Phillip, a regular at the pub, climbed the three steps to the stage to make his request when the unfortunate altercation occurred.
Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Comley emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, urging the public to be considerate of the family’s grief and the potential impact of online commentary on the case.
