There are currently no plans within WWE for Roman Reigns to face Cody Rhodes at next year’s WrestleMania, according to reports.
Reigns and Rhodes did battle at this year’s showcase of the immortals, with fans shocked to see the former retain his titles ahead of the most popular babyface in the company.
While many thought it was time to move the titles onto a new champion, Reigns, who has held his belt for over 1,000 days, retained in Hollywood, leaving Rhodes’ path unclear.
It was expected the story between the two stars would continue into next year’s Mania, but they haven’t crossed paths since the RAW after this year’s show and don’t look like doing so any time soon.
According to The Wrestling Blog, Reigns and Rhodes aren’t expected to have a rematch at next year’s WrestleMania, with the idea initially pitched but talks now slowing.
Reigns has been the most dominant champion in recent WWE history and his Bloodline storyline has been a major draw for audiences.
He’s currently in a feud with his real life and on screen cousin Jimmy Uso, with Jimmy’s brother, Jey, struggling to decide who to align with and the third sibling, Solo Sikoa, siding with Reigns.
It’s likely Reigns will face one of the Usos soon, before a potential match with Sikoa down the line later this year.
Rhodes is nowhere to be seen in the feud, though is coming out the back of an ongoing battle with Brock Lesnar, who broke Rhodes’ arm in storyline before beating him at the most recent premium live event.
It appears Dominik Mysterio will be Rhodes’ newest rival after the two faced off on RAW last week, with a trilogy against Lesnar reportedly planned for SummerSlam in a few weeks, with the feud tied at one win apiece.
Rhodes has regularly referred to ‘finishing the story’ and winning the WWE Championship, a belt his late father Dusty never manager to hold, which contributed to the belief he would dethrone Reigns in April.
It was possible that the company could have built the story up to make Rhodes look even stronger going into next year’s WrestleMania 40, but it seems that’s not currently on the agenda.
Several fans questioned the report, with one tweeting: ‘Are they just not letting their actual plans out?’ while another added: ‘I told you all.’
Reigns, meanwhile, could defend his title in India later this year when WWE head to Asia for what is expected to be a premium live event.
