The Rock has once again hinted at a match against Roman Reigns in the WWE, but has admitted he wants to take time to build it up.
The 51-year-old, who was appointed to the board of directors at WWE umbrella company TKO on Tuesday, returned to WWE on January 1 and teased a match with Roman Reigns.
Reigns has been Universal Champion in the company since 2021, and unified the world titles to become Undisputed WWE Universal Champion in 2022 at WrestleMania when he beat Brock Lesnar.
The majority of his storyline during his time as champion has been focused around his real-life family, mainly Jey and Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa.
The Rock, real name Dwayne Johnson, being Reigns’ cousin could add another layer to the story, and fans have been eager to see if two legends of the company will face off soon.
The Rock says “there’s a chance ‘ he’ll face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania
‘You guys know, I’m a long-gamer and I like to build,’ The Rock said on ESPN’s First Take. ‘Something like this, if myself and Roman Reigns were to main event WrestleMania – and I mean this very respectfully of all the WrestleManias prior, because I grew up in this business and I love it – we could possibly put on, with us as a main event and this incredible group of men and women who are incredible performers, the greatest and the biggest WrestleMania of all time.
‘There’s a chance. I love this business, I love pro wrestling, I love WWE, but also I have this deep passion to grow it and to build it. If we are going to do something like this, I want the world to watch.’
The Rock and Reigns do have history in the ring, with Reigns’ Shield faction attacking the future Hall of Famer in 2013, and The Rock saving Reigns during the Royal Rumble match in 2015.
Though they have indirectly addressed each other in recent months, they are yet to cross paths, but a match seems a matter of when, rather than if.
There had been thoughts that the two would do battle at this year’s WrestleMania, with Reigns expected to face either The Rock or Cody Rhodes in the main event. The Rock’s words, however, seem to suggest it will be the latter, with a match between the two cousins possibly taking place next year instead.
The Rock revealed late last year that he had been in discussions to face Reigns, but put plans on hold because those involved in the planning couldn’t think up anything big enough.
Following his return, there were suggestions the match would take place at February’s Elimination Chamber in Perth, but they were put to bed when it was revealed Reigns’ wouldn’t be present on the show.
