Temuka’s Jarod Trevathan and Carolyn Darby were unbeaten over all eight games on their way to winning Bowls South Canterbury’s mixed pairs title on the Timaru green at the weekend.
For Trevathan, the 12-11 final victory over clubmates Roger Jackson and Mel Reid was his second South Canterbury title this year, with the win also sealing a gold star for winning five titles. It was Darby’s first title.
Saturday’s qualifying competition at the Timaru, Geraldine and Kia Toa greens began with 36 teams and 11 teams reached Sunday’s post-section play.
Players had to be from the same club and the tournament was played 2x4x2 pairs, which meant each player skipped every second end.
The final produced bowls of the highest standard and the team holding shots changed frequently during each end.
From 2-2 after two ends, Trevathan edged to a 4-2 lead after four ends before producing three great shots on the fifth to push out to 7-2.
The next end was the turning point. Trevathan played two great draw shots but Jackson sat one through to be one down. Reid then drew two, but Darby with her last trailed kitty for two and Trevathan added another two for an 11-2 lead.
Jackson and Reid came roaring back though, picking up five on the next end to close to 11-7 and Reid added two beauties on next to close gap to two heading into the last two ends.
On ninth end Reid held another two shots until Darby, with last bowl, drew a perfect shot to lead 12-9.
Jackson held two shots early but Darby drew, only for Reid to shift the shot bowl to hold three and a measure before Trevathan cooly drew third shot. Jackson was unable to change the head with his last bowl.
Trevathan and Darby will now represent South Canterbury in New Zealand finals in Hawke’s Bay in August.
