Chris Pine recently shared his thoughts on Wonder Woman 3, and his comments make Steve Trevor’s Wonder Woman 1984 return even stranger. Steve’s relationship with Diana Prince is one of the best elements of the first Wonder Woman. His sacrifice was tragic, but a necessary one that helped Diana grow as a character and as a hero. When news broke that he would return for Wonder Woman 1984, many were confused, and people were more confused after seeing how the film brought him back. Steve died once again, and it makes another return doubtful once again.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Pine was asked if he would return to DC for a possible Wonder Woman 3. The Star Trek actor thinks the idea is laughable, saying, “Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.” His comments make sense, but this is the idea many had when Steve blew up in a plane in the first film. After these comments, his controversial return in Wonder Woman 1984 looks even worse.
Chris Pine’s Return In Wonder Woman 1984 Was Already “Ridiculous”
Wonder Woman 1984’s plot centers around wishes and the dangers that occur when getting everything a person wants. The film includes a Dreamstone, a rock that grants wishes but takes away something in return. When Diana holds the Dreamstone, she wishes for Steve to return, and he does. While this doesn’t seem convoluted, the movie makes a bizarre choice regarding Steve’s resurrection. Instead of bringing him back normally, he is resurrected in another person’s body, taking over their consciousness.
It’s a strange decision to make, especially when considering the moral implications of this. Not only is it wrong for Diana to use a random stranger as a vessel for Steve, but she and Steve are intimate using this person’s body, making the whole scenario creepy and definitely illegal. Bringing Steve back also reduces Diana as a character, giving her the same arc as the first film and suggesting that her happiness depends on her boyfriend. Pine says it would be “ridiculous” to bring him back again, and Wonder Woman 1984 proves how ridiculous his return can be.
Why Wonder Woman 3 Will Not Be Happening
The DCEU ended after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s 2023 release. James Gunn and Peter Safran are preparing for the launch of the DCU, and this means scrapping many of the DCEU projects that were in development. This includes Wonder Woman 3, as Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman will not carry over into the DCU. She isn’t the only one as the DCU is a full reboot that will feature new actors for a majority of its heroes, except for Peacemaker, Amanda Waller, and Blue Beetle.
Wonder Woman 1984 was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, so its disappointing box office results aren’t surprising. However, it was not a hit with critics and audiences, earning a 58% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. While Gadot’s Wonder Woman could appear in an Elseworlds project, it isn’t likely as Gunn wants to move away from the DCEU, and Gadot’s last outing as the hero was a dud.
