Max Verstappen admitted that Red Bull lacked the pace to challenge Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris at the start of the British GP.
The British GP was an exciting race. Lewis Hamilton finally ended his winless run in the sport and took his first victory in 945 days. However, Hamilton could have faced a challenge from Max Verstappen in the ending stages. As the Dutch driver finished the race within two seconds of the seven-time world champion.
Max Verstappen admitted that he simply lacked the pace to match the Mercedes and McLarens at the start of the race. The reigning world champion highlighted high tire degradation for the disappointing pace. However, Red Bull managed to turn things around by pitting Verstappen at the right time.
“At the start I couldn’t keep up. The Mercedes were pulling away from me and then McLaren’s came by, we were struggling a lot for pace and tire deg. that’s a little bit disappointing”. Max Verstappen told Sky Sports F1
The Austrian team put the Dutchman on intermediates a lap earlier than the race leaders. Moreover, Max Verstappen claimed that the Red Bull pit wall made the right call by putting him on the hard tires for the final stint. As Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris struggled with their soft tires to make it till the end of the Grand Prix.
“Then we did made all the right calls with the slicks to inters and inters back to slicks, that helped me in the race. The team made the right call with the hard tIre too while the others went on with the soft, that for us would never work looking at the deg”. Max Verstappen explained
Max Verstappen claims he ‘maximized’ his result at Silverstone
Verstappen qualified in P4 for the British GP. The Dutch driver had floor damage during Qualifying which hampered his prospects. As such, it seemed that the three-time world champion was about to have a mediocre outing on Sunday. Nevertheless, Max Verstappen was happy with a second place finish and bringing 18 crucial points for the team.
The Dutch driver claimed that he maximized his result considering his pace all weekend. Max Verstappen highlighted that things could have gone much worse for him and Red Bull. The 26-year-old highlighted that not many teams can manage a P2 result on their bad days.
” We really maximized the result, considering the pace that we had, it could’ve been much worse. If it’s a bad day with P2 I’ll take it, not a lot of teams can do that”. Max Verstappen stated
Certainly, Max Verstappen is not disappointed to get a podium finish at Silverstone. More importantly, the Dutch driver overtook Lando Norris in the ending stages of the race. Red Bull would be looking to bounce back in the next round of the season as Verstappen looks for his eighth win of the season.
