In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 turn of events, a cold case that has haunted investigators for over four decades has finally found resolution. An Ohio man, Randy McAllister, has been charged in connection with the 1985 murder of traveling salesman John Warren, following evidence that surfaced behind a Cracker Barrel restaurant nearly 400 miles away.
Warren, who was 44 at the time, was found dead in his hotel room at a now-demolished Holiday Inn in Middletown, Ohio, on October 16, 1985. He had been in town for sales meetings related to his job at an auto parts company. Upon his discovery, several of his belongings, including his 1985 Oldsmobile, were reported missing.
Initially, the investigation faced significant challenges, as detectives were unable to gather enough evidence to make any arrests. However, days after the murder, some of Warren’s stolen items turned up discarded behind a Cracker Barrel in Dalton, Georgia. Meanwhile, his missing vehicle was located in Redington Beach, Florida, as authorities pursued various leads.

Three South Carolina men were once considered suspects, but the case took a turn when lie detector tests confirmed their alibis, leading to the dropping of charges against them. For decades, the investigation remained stagnant until it was reopened in 2019, prompting detectives to revisit the evidence with fresh eyes.

In recent years, some of the recovered items were sent for forensic analysis, leading to McAllister and an unidentified deceased accomplice being named as suspects. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has been diligently working on this case since 2021, and their efforts culminated in a grand jury indictment against McAllister last week.

Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell remarked on the challenges of cold case investigations, stating, “Many times there is some evidence that points to a suspect, but just not enough evidence to move forward.” He praised the tenacity of the detectives who have worked tirelessly to bring this case to a point where charges could finally be filed.

While the exact evidence linking McAllister to the crime has not been disclosed, he is currently being held at the Warren County Jail on charges of aggravated murder and murder. An arraignment is anticipated for Tuesday, according to jail records.
As this long-awaited chapter unfolds, many are left wondering what new details will emerge in this decades-old mystery.
