A 17-year-old Massachusetts high school student is accused of fatally stabbing his mother and younger brotherāand authorities say they found a disturbing connection to artificial intelligence.
According to court documents, Arjun Aravind allegedly used ChatGPT to craft dark āfantasy storiesā about murdering his own family. The Acton-Boxborough Regional High School junior had reportedly been showing āconcerning behaviorā in recent weeks, and prosecutors claim he asked the AI chatbot to generate āgothic novel-kind of storiesā about the killings.
The victims have been identified as Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and her 14-year-old son Siddharth Aravind. Their bodies were discovered around 6:30 p. m.
Tuesday inside the familyās Acton home after the teenās father contacted police. He told officers a tutor couldnāt get inside and that heād last spoken to his wife earlier that morning.
When officers arrived for a wellness check, they found the 14-year-old dead on the first floor and the mother in the basement. Arjun had already fled the scene in his motherās green 2014 Honda Accord, prompting a lookout alert across the area.
Early Wednesday morning, police in nearby Wayland spotted the car outside a business while responding to an unrelated call. They found the teen inside and took him into custody without incident.
āThis is an unspeakable tragedy,ā Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
The official cause of death is still pending from the medical examinerās office, and authorities have not disclosed what weapon, if any, was used.
Arjun now faces two counts of murder, along with several other charges including assault and battery on a household member and motor vehicle theft. He was arraigned on the vehicle charges Wednesday in juvenile court, with a murder arraignment expected Thursday.
