Trainer Who Guided Tyson Fury To Klitschko Win Says Usyk Gameplan ‘Was All Wrong’

The man who guided Tyson Fury to arguably his best career win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 has spoken out against the ‘The Gypsy King’s gameplan against Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury suffered his sole professional defeat at he hands of the Ukrainian last month and with it lost his WBC belt.

It was against another Ukrainian in Klitschko that many think Fury had his best night, upsetting the odds to win a unanimous decision and walk away with the WBA , IBF, WBO and ring magazine titles.

The man in his corner that night was his uncle, Peter Fury.

Speaking to October Red about the loss to Usyk, his former trainer believes Tyson never used his size to his advantage.

“It was a good fight to be fair, he did the best he could do and that’s it. You can only give it your best shot.

Usyk is an expectational world champion, I’ve always said he’s a very, very good fighter, he’s the best that Tyson has ever been up against, that’s for sure and it was a close fight.

For me he was a big man and he never used his tools. I thought there was a lot wrong with it, but that’s just my opinion. I think they got the tactics wrong and I think the gameplan was all wrong, that’s what I think, but still it was a good fight to watch. They both did well, they both did exceptionally well.”

After the fight Tyson revealed that his corner told him he was up going into the last rounds, something which has since come under scrutiny, with Peter Fury making it clear what he would have told his nephew.

“When he fought Klitschko in 2015, we’re coming into the twelfth round, and I said, ‘let me tell you this, we’re in a foreign country, Klitschko has got all the belts, it’s his TV network, I think you’re winning it wide, butt get out there and try and stop him. That’s your call because we could get robbed on points.’ He went out there in the twelfth round and put it on him.

I would have told him, ‘you are down and you’re losing this fight, get in there go out on your back and put it on him.’ That’s what should have happened in the corner, but that’s me.”
